Debriefing Appointments

Debriefings are structured opportunities for reflection that facilitate healthy transitions. They give you the time and space to share the story of your overseas experience in a meaningful way. Internal debriefings are those that are conducted by your sending organization. An external debriefing is conducted outside of your organization and all information remains confidential subject to any legal requirements placed on the health-care provider by general law.

IHM suggests that a combination of three debriefings - two internal and one external - is optimal from a health management perspective:

A sending organization exit debriefing prior to overseas departure focusing primarily on role and relationship issues in the overseas context.

A sending organization re-entry debriefing after arrival in the "home culture" focusing primarily on the differences of perceived levels of support during the overseas assignment between the sending organization and expatriate.

An IHM external debriefing after arrival in the "home culture", focusing primarily on the impact of the overseas environment on the expatriate's health and development with the option of also assessing emotional resiliency in anticipation of the re-entry transition.

Preparation for an IHM debriefing appointment requires that you complete:

1. the online General Health Screening Update
2. an IHM Re-Entry Debriefing Form
3. the online EQ-iTM if you choose the full debriefing package.
